Our Story

Bill and Karen Novak have owned Williston Saddlery since October 1979 and sell name brand saddles, tack, Kiefer Built trailers, Purina Feeds, and trailer parts.
Karen is the daughter of Alvin & Dorine Gabbert from Lefor, N.D. south of Dickinson. They raised registered Angus cattle and Quarter Horses. Alvin trained for the public and the family showed and rodeoed. Alvin was inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2005. Horses they were recognized with were Bullet King, King Trumpet, Mr. Lobo McCue, Keen Gal, Apache of Littleman Creek, they competed in all classes offered at shows and won. Alvin won the North Dakota Rodeo Association calf roping title and Karen's older brother Dan, won the team roping. Karen won the North Dakota High School Rodeo Association all around cowgirl honors as a freshman & sophomore, the only years she competed. Karen has a Bachelor Science in Elementary Education and taught before going to work in our store.
Bill was raised near Williston, N.D. on a diversified farm, combination dry land & irrigation that included dairy, potatoes, alfalfa, wheat, etc. He was raised with grade horses until a 1969 breeding of his first registered Quarter Horse. He also has a Bachelor Science degree with majors in Mathematics and English, and taught Jr. High School for nearly 10 years.
Since teaming together they have always stood a stallion to the public.

He has qualified Jr. for the World in team roping along with earning over 50 points at his first 4 roping circuits, the best earning 14 heading & 14 heeling points with the Sioux Empire show in S.D.

Along with running the store Bill attended CSU in Fort Collins to become certified in collecting and processing equine semen for shipment as well as AI refresher course for mares. He was first certified by ABS in 1971. Bill and Karen have been married since June 6, 1977 and work together raising and riding a few very good horses. They don't raise a lot but try to have a few really good ones all the time. With their horses Karen enjoys trail and cutting with young horses and especially enjoys finished horses with "power steering". Bill enjoys reining, calf roping, cutting and free style reining.

Currently, Bill and Karen have been running the store for 45 years and are recognized AQHA breeders for over 40 years. They are both recognized Purina horse consultants along with other certifications and memberships including, Purina pet certification, wildlife certification, Ultium performance certification, and being members of the Stockmen and Cattlewomen's associations.
